Start by Unpicking the Question

Most lost marks come from answering a question the examiner did not ask. Identify the instruction word (analyse, evaluate, discuss), the topic, and the scope or limits. Rewrite the question in your own words and keep it in front of you as you write.

A first-class essay stays relentlessly on the question. Every paragraph should be able to finish the sentence "this matters to the question because…".

Build an Argument, Not a Summary

First-class essays are made in the edit. Leave the draft, then return and cut anything that does not serve the argument, check that each paragraph answers the question, and verify every citation. Read it aloud to catch clumsy sentences and check your referencing is consistent.
