✅ What UK Markers Actually Reward
Most UK institutions allow roughly ten per cent either side of the stated word count, with quotations, references and appendices usually excluded - but the handbook decides, and some departments count everything. Check before you write, because trimming 400 words from a finished essay is harder than planning to the right length.
A Turnitin similarity score is not a plagiarism verdict. It measures matched text, and a well-referenced essay with block quotations and a long reference list can show a double-digit figure with nothing wrong. What matters is whether matches are properly attributed, which is why you read the report rather than the number.
